In the era of thirty forth Emperor Jomei, Karino Saburo Yukihiro who was a hunter chased a white deer and discovered a hot spring where he built a Shinto shrine, called Nasu Onsen Jinja. He spread around advantages of hot spring all over Japan. In the summer vacation, a morning market is held in the shrine.

Shika no Yu (meaning Hot Spring for Deer) is a birthplace of the Nasu Hot spring which has been a public therapeutic bath for a long time. The name of Shika no Yu is originated in a legend where wild deer bathed in the water to soothe their injuries. The bathhouse is made of wood striding across a stream of hot water. The bathtub and washing place are made of wood, too. You can enjoy several bathtubs comfortably at different temperatures, soaking in warm water while measuring time with a sand glass. There are various bathing ways such as men and women mixed bathing or women-only bathing.
